4.  Can I wear a lodge flap on my Cub Scout Den Leader uniform?

8.  What are this website's policies?

ANSWERS:

1.  Units are allowed to recommend one adult for every fifty Scouts. Operations Update 01-1 states:

"Troops or teams having more than 50 registered, active youth members may nominate an additional adult for every 50 registered, active youth, or fraction thereof. (As an example, a troop having 51 to 100 registered, active youth may nominate two adults each year if at least one youth has been elected.)"

Some publications may still have the old wording that limited a unit to recommending just one adult no matter what the unit size. These documents are being corrected as they are updated. Because of publication schedules, some documents may have the old wording even if their print date was after January 2001. These will be corrected in the future.  The rest of the adult nomination process, including the membership requirements, review by the lodge adult selection committee, approval of the Scout executive, etc., did not change.

The Sample Unit Election Forms on the national OA web site have the correct wording for recommending one adult per 50 Scouts.

2.  Once a Scout goes through his Ordeal, he is a member of the Order of the Arrow for the rest of his life (as long as he is registered with the BSA).  As he moves to new councils, he needs to connect with the local OA lodge at each place to continue his active membership (and pay local lodge dues).

You should contact your current council's OA Lodge Adviser (click here to see Talidandaganu's current lodge adviser).  If you do not know who your current council's lodge adviser is, contact your council service center and ask them for his name and number.  Explain the situation, and you will probably be able to establish your membership based on the information you have and any other items that you may have (such as an OA sash, pocket flap, etc.).  If necessary, you may have to contact your former Council to see if they can forward any records they may have of your membership.

3.  Lodge dues are paid by remitting them to the lodge staff (professional) adviser.  You can do this by visiting the council service center or a Talidandaganu' event.  Lodge dues are approximately $10 each year.

4.  If you have paid your dues and are an active member, you can wear the OA lodge flap on your uniform.  This is true for all adults registered as BSA leaders, no matter what part of the program (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing) you are currently in.

5.  No.  Venturing crews cannot elect members to the OA.  Order of the Arrow elections can be held in Boy Scout Troops and Varsity Scout Teams only.  For more details, see Operations Update 99-2.

6.  Send or bring your completed Information Sheet and $10 dues to the Scout Service Center in Chattanooga, or a lodge event.  You must be currently registered with BSA to be an active member of any OA lodge, and you must be a member of the Cherokee Area Council to be a member of Talidandaganu'.  If you are also current with dues in the other lodge, you can transfer to Talidandaganu' for $4.00 for the remainder of the current year.

7.  Phonetically, it is easiest to learn it in three parts:  TALI - DANDA - GANU.  The TALI part rhymes with "holly."  DANDA rhymes with "Wanda."  GANU rhymes with "canoe."  With the correct accent on syllables:

TAH-lee DON-da ga-NEW.  (the "da" and the "ga" are very short, with no pauses)

Another acceptable pronunciation (and most popular among lodge members) is as follows:  TALI rhymes with  "cali" in "California."  DANDA rhymes with "Amanda."  GANU rhymes with "canoe."  It is spoken like this:

         TĂLDĀN-da ga-NEW

8.  This website complies with the Official OA Web Site Guidelines.  See the policy here.
